Do women actually need midwives—or do they need something else entirely? In this review of Michel Odent’s Do We Need Midwives?, I explore his arguments about physiological birth, the fetus ejection reflex, oxytocin, privacy, and the ways modern birth environments may interfere with the hormonal intelligence of labor.
I’ll also share where I disagree with Odent and why I believe the deeper question is not whether women need midwives, but what a woman actually needs to birth from her full power—and who, if anyone, should be beside her.
